What is BMI?
Body Mass Index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It's a quick screening number used for adults, not a diagnosis.
Adult BMI categories (WHO)
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obesity |
Limits of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, and healthy ranges differ for children, during pregnancy, for older adults and for some ethnic groups. Talk to a healthcare professional about what's right for you.
