How much should I tip?

Tipping customs vary a lot by country. In the United States, 15–20% is typical at sit-down restaurants. In the UK, 10–12.5% is common and is sometimes already added as a service charge — check the bill. In many other countries, rounding up or leaving small change is normal.

Quick mental maths

For 10%, move the decimal point one place left. For 20%, double that. For 15%, take 10% and add half of it again.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Traditionally the tip is based on the pre-tax amount, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.

What does rounding up each share do?

It rounds every person's share up to the next whole number, so nobody needs coins and the server gets a little extra.
